Carla Milazzo recognised as 2026 Young Agronomist Award winner
Broome-based agronomist Carla Milazzo has been named a winner of Agronomy Australia’s 2026 Young Agronomist Award, recognising her emerging leadership and contribution to irrigated agriculture in northern Western Australia.
Presented at the 2026 Agronomy Conference Gala Dinner in Darwin, the award celebrates Carla’s work supporting producers across the West Kimberley and Pilbara, where distance and challenging conditions demand innovative approaches to research, extension and knowledge sharing.
Since 2022, Carla has led research into nitrogen use efficiency in high-yielding subtropical grasses at the Skuthorpe Research Site. Her work is generating practical evidence to help producers reduce excessive fertiliser use while maintaining yield and quality, delivering both economic and environmental benefits.
Carla has also demonstrated strong leadership in agricultural extension, helping establish the Northern Irrigation Solutions online discussion group to connect producers with technical information and each other across a vast region.
Her work has been shared through field days, regional meetings, technical publications and national conferences, helping turn research into practical outcomes for northern producers.
Agronomy Australia President Adjunct Professor Muhammad Sohail Mazhar said Carla represents the future of Australian agronomy, combining research excellence with a strong commitment to producers and the regions in which they operate.
